AI Astrologers Now Give You the First Answer Free. Check What the Second One Costs

In early October, several AI astrology apps in the US and India made the first question free. What happens next varies: some price each answer up front, while AstroSage bills its named AI astrologers by the minute, and that is where the complaints pile up.

On Oct. 7, 2026, two AI astrology apps shipped the same change. Lani AI Astrology's release note said anyone can now get a personalized answer from its AI astrologer without subscribing. Om.AI kept it to five words at the top of its own note: your first question is free. A week earlier, on Oct. 1, India's AstroSage Kundli released version 10.5, and the first item in its notes was a fix for its free first AI chat. Numerology & Astrology added a "Your story" card to its synastry report on Oct. 2, reading two charts as one relationship, with the first paragraph free.

These apps sell answers, and in India the number of people asking is climbing fast. The Times of India reported on Oct. 10 that astrology apps were downloaded 150 million times in the country from January to September, up 75% on the same period last year, citing figures from Sensor Tower. Daily time spent in them rose from 3.5 minutes in the first quarter of 2022 to 5.3 minutes this year. The paper described an AI-powered shift and named AstroSage Kundli: AI Astrology at 25 million downloads, up 172%, and a newer app listed on Google Play as Tarot99 - Astrology AI at 11 million. For an app that charges per answer, the first answer is the free sample.

Om.AI shows the sample in its App Store screenshots. The free screen suggests four questions: should I switch jobs this year, when will I get married, when will my money problems end, is this the right time to start a business. The listing promises answers with dates, in months. In another screenshot a user asks it to walk through their 2027, and the reply goes month by month, saying Saturn first leaves its sign on June 3 and returns on Oct. 20. AstroDir checked those dates with an open-source ephemeris in the sidereal zodiac that Vedic astrology uses: in 2027 Saturn does enter Aries on June 3 and slips back into Pisces around Oct. 20. The sky is real. What it means for one person's career can't be checked. Lani's screenshot answers a user asking whether they will meet their soulmate soon with talk of intense, transformative experiences in their love life, and no date.

The second answer is where the apps split. Lani and Om.AI sell by the question. Lani's in-app purchase list includes "Ask AI Astrologer 1 Q & A" for $1.99, alongside 7-, 30- and 365-day forecasts and Experience Plus at $4.99 or $39.99. Om.AI sells five questions for $2.99, about 60 cents each, with Premium at $4.99 a month or $34.99 a year, and gives you and a friend three free questions each when you invite them. Per-question pricing tells you the cost before you ask, whether the reply runs one line or a full screen. Numerology & Astrology sells a subscription at $6.99 a month or $50.99 a year, plus a $4.99 pro upgrade; past the free first paragraph, the relationship story is paid.

AstroSage charges by the minute. On Oct. 10, 2026, astrosage.com listed 30 "AI Astrologers" on its homepage, each with its own rate: Arjun Pandit and Astro Ananya at 11 rupees a minute, Swami Ji at 17, Mr. Rao, Rupesh and Astro Vinod at 35. Seven carried a "Today's Offer" tag. In the App Store screenshots each one has a portrait, a specialty, languages and a star rating, with Call and Chat buttons underneath, laid out just like a list of human astrologers. One of them is called AstroGPT. It costs the same 22 rupees a minute as the one called Mom the Astrologer. A banner offers the first call or chat free; after that, the app runs on a prepaid wallet.

The per-minute meter is also where the complaints pile up. A one-star review on India's App Store on Oct. 4, written against version 10.5, says the predictions didn't match what happened, the app bills for every minute, and the AI keeps asking probing follow-up questions that stretch the conversation and the bill; money left in the wallet, the reviewer adds, is hard to use up or get back. Earlier reviews run along the same lines. One on July 30 says the end of a free chat showed an offer of 1 rupee a minute, but after a top-up the chat started at 19. One on Aug. 4 says the promised free first chat never came. One on Aug. 24 says 69 rupees sat in the wallet while the app asked for more before it would chat. These are individual accounts. In Chandigarh, the Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar reported on Oct. 3 on young people using AI astrology and quoted a user who saw a free-chat pop-up on social media, got a 90-second window to ask about timing and career, and hit a payment screen the moment it ended. The paper closed with a reminder not to get caught in a payment trap after the free 90 seconds.

A third model starts with a token payment. Tarot99 is rated 4.3 from more than 65,000 reviews on Google Play in India and sits fifth among free lifestyle apps. The negative reviews shown on its store page, from June to August and each marked helpful by 20 to 30 people, describe a 10-minute trial for 1 rupee where payment alone took about eight minutes, and 199 rupees taken through AutoPay without a clear warning.

Table: Lani AI Astrology, first answer free, then $1.99 a question; Om.AI, first question free, five for $2.99; Numerology & Astrology, first paragraph free, $6.99 a month; AstroSage Kundli, first AI chat free, then 11 to 35 rupees a minute; Tarot99, reviews describe a 1-rupee 10-minute trial followed by a 199-rupee AutoPay charge

So take the free question. It is the cheapest way to see whether an AI astrology app is any use to you: whether it uses your birth time, whether it commits to a month or settles for "transformative experiences." Before you ask, find the price of the second one. Per-question apps print it in the in-app purchase list. With a per-minute AI, put everything you want to know into your first message, load only what you plan to spend, and don't follow every follow-up question it asks. With a 1-rupee trial, check whether it turns into an automatic charge. Whether any of the answers come true is something neither the free question nor the paid one can tell you.
