Real Psychics, AI-Written Pitches

Keen's redesigned homepage promises real humans, not AI, and its advisor rules ban AI output in paid sessions. The steps before you pay, from search recommendations to advisor pitches and review summaries, can all be machine-written, and the review summaries leave out complaints about running out of funds or getting cut off.

On Keen's homepage there is a red card in the bottom left corner that says "Actual people on the other end." Click it and it flips over to a single line: the advisors are reviewed, rated, and "real humans. Not AI." The card arrived with a redesign this summer, and the iPhone app picked up the same look in an update on September 18. Keen, owned by Ingenio, has sold live psychic readings by the minute for more than twenty years, over the phone or in text chat, on love, work and, for some customers, a relative who has died. Creative Review reported on September 18 that the rebrand, by Mother Design, was partly a response to people turning to AI assistants, coaching platforms and astrology to handle uncertainty, and that the new look leans on photographs of real advisors to set Keen apart from AI products.

So when you pay Keen, are you paying for a person? Going through Keen's own policies and advisor help pages, the answer comes in two halves. The paid minutes are covered by a rule that bans AI. The steps before them, the recommendation, the one-line pitch and the review summary that steer you toward a particular advisor, can each be written by AI, and by default some of them are.

The rule sits in the policy Keen applies to advisors. During paid sessions they are expected to communicate with their own thoughts and writing, and using AI-generated output is prohibited because it may raise privacy or legal problems; spelling and grammar checkers are the only tools allowed. That clause was added in September 2025, almost a year before it turned into homepage copy. How Keen polices it isn't spelled out; the policy says only that enforcement is up to Keen, and the user agreement lets Keen review mail and chat for compliance.

A rule hasn't settled customers' suspicions, on Keen or anywhere else in the pay-per-minute chat business. In August a Purple Garden reviewer on the App Store described slow replies and questions asked again after they had been answered, and concluded an AI was on the other end. A California Psychics review in July claimed most of the readers were bots. A one-star Keen review in January simply told people to use ChatGPT instead, since it's free. These are individual customers' guesses, not proof that any advisor used AI, but they show how hard it is to tell from a chat window. Smaller rivals now sell the difference: Psychic Vision's App Store listing offers five minutes for $1.99 with no AI.

The other half happens before any money changes hands. First-time visitors can describe what they want in their own words, and Keen's help center gives the example of someone looking for an advisor who can connect with a dog that has just died. An AI then suggests three advisors and writes a short explanation of why they fit. On category pages, the line under each advisor's name is AI-generated by default. Keen introduced that feature for advisors in September 2025, the same month as the AI ban: unless an advisor writes their own, the system distills one from their profile, refreshes it weekly, and, Keen tells advisors, optimizes it for clicks and conversions. Advisors can switch to their own words, but a customer scrolling the page can't see which is which.

On September 28 the Psychic Readings category loaded 18 advisors. Three summaries began "Illuminating paths," four included "Guiding souls," and wedged between them was an all-caps line with two exclamation marks boasting 81,000 five-star reviews, which reads like the advisor's own handiwork. Nothing on the page is labelled, so we can't say which lines came from AI, only that several read as if one hand wrote them. Those 18 advisors charged between $2.44 and $15 a minute, with the first five minutes at $1 for new customers.

Open an advisor's page and the reviews section starts with a paragraph headed "What other customers say," which is labelled as AI-generated from reviews. Keen's advisor help page adds that it refreshes weekly and leaves out mentions of running out of funds, getting cut off and tech issues. Those problems are rarely the advisor's fault. They are also exactly where a first-time customer paying by the minute is most likely to lose money.

If a session goes badly, the recourse is modest. Keen's satisfaction guarantee must be claimed within 72 hours, pays up to $25 in Keen credit rather than cash, and can be used once every 30 days. The user agreement says Keen does not verify or guarantee any advisor's credentials or identity, and the site footer calls the service entertainment.

On Keen, then, "Not AI" is a promise about the person on the phone or in the chat once the meter starts, and Keen has written a rule to back it. The steps that decide who that person is, the recommendation, the pitch and the review summary, may all be machine-written, and Keen tells advisors the pitch is tuned for clicks. If a human reading is what you're paying for, spend a few extra minutes in the raw reviews, the bad ones especially, before a line about illuminating your path makes the choice for you.
